Why Feed Senior Light Dog Food?Gracie the golden retriever.

Senior working dog food * is best fed to dogs as they are coming to the end of their adult life stage. In general this will be around 8-9 years old for an average dog. However there are a few things to consider before making the change. Firstly, look at you dog. Do they look old or act old? If they are still bounding about the place and expending loads of energy, it may be a bit premature to change them onto a senior diet. This is because one aspect of a senior light diet is a lower fat content.

Secondly, consider their size. Larger dogs age more quickly than smaller breeds so will need to be introduced to a Senior dog food at an earlier stage. Finally, look at their breed. Certain breeds like Labradors are not only prone to joint problems but are also liable to being overweight… not a good combination for a dog of any age let alone an older dog. As a result, use these pointers to help determine the best time to transition your dog onto a Senior specific food.

Lower Fat Levels

Our senior light diet has a fat content that is on average 15% lower than the adult equivalents. This means it also qualifies as a Light dog food. As a result there is less chance of excessive weight gain due to a slowing metabolism which is part of the ageing process. Therefore, changing a very energetic dog onto a senior diet too soon may result in unwanted weight loss.

If on the other hand, your dog is starting to slow down a bit or show the early signs of ageing like joint stiffness it would be a very good time to introduce a senior diet. In addition, lower levels of fat are known to reduce the chances of pancreatitis in ageing dogs. Furthermore, these lower fat levels means that Easterbrooks Senior is also suitable as a low fat or weight loss diet for your adult dog should they need to loose a few pounds.

Fish & RiceWhite Fish Fillets

Easterbrooks Senior Light dog food uses a combination of fish & rice as the main protein and carbohydrate sources. Fish is an easily digestible, lean & nutritious form of protein. Whilst the mixture of white & brown rice gives a balanced carbohydrate blend that provides functional fibre (along with beet pulp) for sensitive digestion. Furthermore the added vitamin & mineral package helps support the immune system as well as general health. As a hypoallergenic food, it is naturally preserved with Rosemary extract.

Kidney Support

Another important factor in a senior dog food is the level of protein and phosphorous in the diet. Easterbrooks Senior dog food has lower levels of protein and phosphorous compared to adult varieties. As a result there is reduced pressure on the kidneys which become less efficient as your dog ages. Taking some load off them early can prolong the life of the kidneys.

Joint Support for Senior Dogs

As mentioned already, joint stiffness is something that will start to affect your dogs as they age. Unfortunately it affects us all! Initially, there may be no clearly apparent symptoms being displayed. Maybe a gradual, almost imperceptible slowing down over the course of a few months. However by around 9 years old for most dogs, there will be some form of joint stiffness/arthritis creeping in. The lower fat content of a senior dog food will help to manage their weight. Excess weight not only means that the joints have to work harder but it can speed up the onset of joint pain, so keeping their weight in check is crucial.

Similarly, it is important to actively support their joints as they age. A great way of doing this is by adding some joint supplements to their food. In Easterbrooks senior dog food, we have added Chondroitin, Glucosamine and MSM to help reduce joint inflammation and keep things moving smoothly for as long as possible!

Senior Light Working Dog Food Feeding Guidelines

Easterbrooks Senior Dog Food Feeding Guide

Easterbrooks Senior Dog Food Feeding Guide

All bags of Easterbrooks Senior dog food come with suggested feeding quantities. However, these are purely a guide. For instance, the following factors can have an affect on feeding quantities for older dogs:

  • neutering. Neutered dogs should have their portions reduced by about 10%.
  • individual breed.
  • metabolic rate.
  • level of activity.
  • age of the dog.
  • sex of the dog.
  • ambient living temperature etc.

As a result, adjust feeding quantities as necessary. No matter how good a food is, too much is no good! For example, over feeding will usually lead to poor digestion and soft poo. Not to mention weight gain. Similarly, too little will affect their ability to maintain a healthy weight as they age.

Easterbrooks Senior Light working dog food Breeder Packs are designed for households with multiple dogs or working/sporting dogs. If you do not have working dogs, reduce suggested feeding quantities on the back of the bag by about 10%. Alternatively, use the guide above which shows the feeding recommendation for non-working dogs.  Remember, Breeder Packs are Vat Free so can be a more cost effective way to feed your dogs.
